If cannabis feels cheaper than it used to, that's not your imagination, and it's one of the biggest business stories in the industry right now. The trade press calls it price compression, and last year it pushed U.S. cannabis sales into a decline for the first time on record.
The numbers
According to the MJBiz Factbook, total U.S. cannabis sales fell from $32 billion in 2024 to $29.94 billion in 2025, the first year-over-year drop the industry has ever recorded. The striking part is why: in many states, consumers actually bought more product even as the dollars shrank. In other words, demand isn't collapsing, prices are.
Wholesale tells the same story. The U.S. Cannabis Spot Index sat at roughly $1,015 per pound in early April 2026, down about 6.8% year-to-date. Analysts point to a familiar cause: many states hand out licenses to chase tax revenue, fees, and jobs, without matching supply to real demand. The result is a flood of product and a race to the bottom on price.
Where New York fits
New York is feeling it, but more gently than the hardest-hit markets. The state's average item price slid to about $31.29 in February 2026, down from $35.41 a year earlier. That's real deflation, but it's mild next to oversupplied markets like California, Michigan, and Oregon, where per-gram prices have fallen below $3 and heavy discounting is now standard.
The reason is New York's still-constrained supply. Because legal product isn't yet flooding every shelf, dispensaries here don't have to slash prices as aggressively to move inventory. First-time-customer deals and promos exist, but the desperation discounting seen out West hasn't fully arrived.
What it means for shoppers and shops
For New York shoppers, the trend is mostly good news: legal prices are drifting down, and competition among licensed stores means better deals over time. For operators, it's a warning. As New York licenses more cultivators and stores, the same compression squeezing other states will build here too, and the businesses that survive will be the ones that control costs and build real brand loyalty now. Cannabis products are for adults 21+.
