One of the cannabis industry's better-known multistate operators is pulling out of New Jersey, and the retreat says a lot about how hard the business has become even in strong markets next door to New York.
The Cannabist Company is closing two cultivation and manufacturing sites in Vineland, New Jersey, at 17 W. Park Ave. and 1560 N. West Blvd., on Oct. 11, laying off 86 workers, nearly all of its New Jersey grow and production staff. In bankruptcy filings, the company said "regulatory, industry, and financial challenges" had left it with a severe liquidity crisis and "unable to meet its financial obligations as they become due."
The dispensaries go to a rival
Cannabist is not just shrinking, it's exiting. The company is selling the rest of its New Jersey operation, including its three retail dispensaries in Deptford, Vineland, and Mays Landing, to Vireo Growth in a deal valued at up to $35 million. Vireo has been on an acquisition run, snapping up assets across several states as weaker operators sell.
How it got here
The collapse didn't happen overnight. Cannabist and its Canadian subsidiary began insolvency proceedings in Ontario in March 2026 under Canada's Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act, then won Chapter 15 bankruptcy recognition in a Delaware court in May. The New Jersey closures are the latest concrete step in that wind-down.
Why New York readers should care
New Jersey is New York's closest adult-use neighbor, and the two markets share operators, investors, and shoppers who cross the river. When a company Cannabist's size can't make the numbers work in a mature East Coast market, it's a signal about the whole region: rising costs, heavy regulation, falling prices, and limited access to banking and capital are squeezing even large players.
The flip side is consolidation. Assets aren't disappearing, they're changing hands, with stronger operators like Vireo absorbing the stores and licenses that struggling companies shed. For New York's own operators, still early in their build-out, it's a preview of the shakeout that tends to follow a market's first few years. Cannabis products are for adults 21+.
