The 2026 World Cup has the New York area packed with visitors from around the world, and many will arrive somewhere they have never been: a place where buying cannabis at a legal store is completely normal. Out in Washington State, health officials spent the month warning that tournament cities should brace for travelers who badly underestimate how strong modern legal cannabis is. The same advice applies here. If you are in town for the matches and curious about the legal market, here is what to know before you walk into a dispensary.
Yes, it is legal, but only at licensed shops
Adults 21 and older can buy and possess cannabis in New York. The catch that trips up visitors is where to buy. New York spent years fighting a wave of unlicensed storefronts, and plenty are still operating. Only licensed dispensaries sell lab-tested, accurately labeled products. Bring a valid government ID, and if a shop cannot show it is licensed, walk out. Our guide to how much you can legally buy and carry covers the limits.
The potency warning is real
Washington's health department put it bluntly: legal cannabis is often far stronger than tourists expect. Flower frequently tests above 20 percent THC, and a single standard edible serving in New York is 10 milligrams, plenty for someone with little tolerance. Edibles are where most visitors get in trouble, because they take 45 minutes to two hours to take hold. The rule the experts repeat is simple: start low, around 2 to 5 milligrams, and wait at least 60 to 90 minutes before taking more. Our summer low-dose guide and edibles guide lay out beginner-friendly options.
Drinks are the easy on-ramp
If you are used to a beer at the match, a low-dose THC drink is the most familiar way in. Many come in 2 to 5 milligram cans, act faster than a gummy, and wear off sooner, which makes them hard to overdo.
Where you can and cannot use it
You can generally consume cannabis where smoking tobacco is allowed, which means not indoors at most businesses, not on transit, and never in a vehicle, including as a passenger. Hotels can ban it. And no matter how the matches are spread across the region, do not carry cannabis across state lines or through an airport, that turns a legal purchase into a federal problem. Several venues sit in New Jersey, which has its own rules, so do not assume a New York purchase travels with you.
If someone has too much
Overdoing it is uncomfortable but not dangerous. Find a calm spot, hydrate, and wait it out, the peak fades over a few hours. Our explainer on coming down safely walks through it.
Make it part of the trip
Cannabis lounges are still rare in New York, but the culture is everywhere this summer, including spots like FlynnStoned's Midtown East watch parties. Buy legal, start low, mind where you light up, and the New York market becomes one of the more interesting souvenirs of the trip. Educational only, not legal or medical advice. For adults 21+.
